Night at the ER

Last night we had to make a trip the Emergency Room with Eli. After getting picked up from my Aunt's house, we noticed he was not his normal happy self. After dinner I took his temperature and it was 101.5. I decided to take him to the medical aid unit in Smyrna. They looked him over and told me that because he was not quite 3 months old, as a precaution they wanted to run some tests on him to see if they could tell what was causing this fever. Of course they did not have the means to do the tests in the office so Bob and I had to take him to the ER. Luckily, we got a room right away because the previous doctor called down and told them we were on our way. We got there around 9pm. The nurses had to do all kinds of tests on him. They had to collect urine...and let me tell you, they were not going to just wait for him to pee in a cup! Poor baby had to get a catheter. The nurses reassured me that he would not remember this...we'll see. Then he had to have a chest x-ray. They put him in this contraption that looked like a medieval torture device and he was not very happy. The last thing they needed to get was some blood, so the nice nurses (it took 3) held him down and got what they needed. After that we had to wait an hour to get the results. The doctor came in to tell us that his blood test and urine test came back negative and that his chest x-ray showed a small smudgy area. He told us that he sent the x-rays to Australia! All the way to Australia to be looked at by a radiologist...technology is amazing! X-rays were looked through and they were not concerned with the smudgy area. Finally he was all clear, and no real results to why he was running that fever. He was giving an antibiotic via IV and some Tylenol, and we were sent on our way home! We didn't get home until 2am! Needless to say it was a very long night. I ended up taking off a day of work and Bob had to get up to go to work at 6am. Thanks to Mimi, we did not have to bring Delaney in with us, because that would have been a nightmare!

This morning Eli woke up and his fever was gone and he was beginning to be his regular self. We had to go to our doctor for a follow up, and he checked out just fine. It was unfortunate that he had to go through all of those tests, but it would have been worse to have had something really be wrong and not have the tests done! We are thankful Eli is such a strong healthy baby that fought through his first fever even after he was stuck with needles and tubes!

  1. Ms. Tabby - I feel your pain. I was running a fever a month ago on February 14th and made mom and dad take me to the hospital. I didn't have to get blood work or the catheter (been there done that) but I did have to do the x-ray and have them put a booger thing up my noise. Comes to find out I had the flu. I hope Eli feels better and I can't wait to come and play with him. Love Michael
